Tattoo Healing Week by Week: What Is Normal and What Is Not
Peeling, itching, cloudy skin: here is what a new tattoo looks like each week while it heals, what is completely normal, and the few signs that mean you should call us or a doctor.
- Most tattoos look healed on the surface in two to three weeks and are fully healed underneath in about six.
- Redness, tenderness and a little clear or inked fluid in the first two days are normal.
- Peeling and itching in week two are normal. Picking and scratching are what cause patchy healing.
- Spreading redness, heat, swelling that gets worse after day three, or fever are reasons to see a doctor.
Days 1 to 3: it is a fresh wound
Expect redness, some swelling and a warm, sunburned feeling around the piece. It may weep a little clear fluid with some ink in it, which is why your artist covered it. Keep it clean, wash gently with unscented soap and lukewarm water, pat it dry with a paper towel, and follow the aftercare your artist gave you. Sleep on clean sheets and keep pets off it. This stage is about keeping it clean, not about lotion.
Days 4 to 14: peeling and itching
This is the stage that worries people, and it is completely normal. The top layer flakes like a sunburn, and the tattoo can look dull or patchy while it does. It will itch, sometimes a lot. Do not pick, peel or scratch. Lifting a flake early can pull ink with it and leave a light spot. A thin layer of the moisturizer your artist recommended, and a gentle tap instead of a scratch, gets you through it.
Weeks 2 to 4: the cloudy stage
Once the flakes are gone, many tattoos look slightly milky or shiny. That is a new layer of skin settling over the ink. Colors and fine lines come back into focus over the next few weeks. This is also when people think a line has faded and want a touch-up right away. Give it time. We judge touch-ups after the piece is fully healed, not before.
Weeks 4 to 6: healed underneath
The surface usually looks finished by week three, but the deeper skin is still settling until about week six. Keep up sunscreen once the skin is closed, since sun is the main reason tattoos fade early. Swimming pools, hot tubs, the ocean and long soaks should wait until it is fully healed. If anything still looks uneven at six weeks, that is the right time to book a touch-up.
When it is not normal
Call a doctor if redness keeps spreading past the edges after day three, the area gets hotter or more swollen instead of less, you see yellow or green pus, red streaks running from the tattoo, or you get a fever. Those are signs of infection and need medical care, not more lotion. Raised, itchy bumps only in one ink color can be a reaction to that pigment. Tell us and see a doctor. We would always rather hear from you early.
Frequently asked questions
- Is it normal for my tattoo to look faded while it heals?
- Yes. The peeling and cloudy stages make almost every tattoo look dull for a few weeks. The real result shows once it is fully healed.
- When can I go to the gym?
- Light activity after a couple of days is usually fine. Avoid heavy sweating, friction on the piece and shared equipment touching it for the first week or two.
- When can I swim?
- Not until it is fully healed, usually four to six weeks. Pools, hot tubs and the ocean all carry infection risk for an open tattoo.
- Do touch-ups cost extra?
- Most studios, including ours, include one touch-up within a few months for healing issues. Fading from sun or picking is a different conversation.
